Rewards influence behavior, and children with ADHD respond effectively to
incentives linked to short-term goals. Some of the behavioural techiques are:
Positive Reinforcement: Rewarding good behavior with privileges. For example,
after finishing house chores and homework, the child can watch TV or play on the
computer.
Time-out: Removing factors that reinforce negative behavior. For instance, if a
child exhibits rude behavior like hitting a sibling, they must sit in the corner for a
set period, such as 5 minutes.
Response cost: Taking away rewards or privileges following undesirable behavior.
For example, if homework is not done, the child loses free-time privileges.
Token economy: A system combining positive reinforcement and response cost.
The child earns stars for completing tasks and loses stars for misbehavior, such as
leaving their seat without permission.
