What is Learning Disability (LD)?
Ÿ Learning Disability is a condition in school
going children characterized by signicant
difculties in academic skills like learning,
reading, writing, reasoning, mathematical
problems etc.,
Ÿ These children will have average or above
average intelligence. That is their IQ is like
other normal children
Ÿ However, all children who have difculty in
academics may not have learning disability.
Ÿ They usually show a relatively stronger ability
to learn visually.
Ÿ It is seen in both boys and girls. However, it is
more common in boys compared to girls.
Causes of Learning Disability
The causes for Learning Disability are not well
understood but may include:
Ÿ Heredity – abnormality in genes inherited from
parents.
Ÿ Problems during pregnancy and birth – these
include abnormalities in the developing brain,
premature birth, illness or injury, fetal exposure
to alcohol or drugs, low birth weight, oxygen
deprivation.

A child with Learning Disability may exhibit one or more of
