Causes for Intellectual Disability



       During pregnancy, if the mother has

         Ÿ  Viral infections such as rubella, cytomegalovirus,
            chicken pox etc.
         Ÿ  Accidents, falling from stairs causing injury to the
            fet us
         Ÿ  Lack of nutrition.
         Ÿ  Inadequate amount of vitamins, minerals such as
            iodine, calcium in the diet.
         Ÿ  Consumption of alcohol
         Ÿ  Intake of excessive medications
         Ÿ  Mental or psychological stress during pregnancy
         During birth, if the child has:
         Ÿ  Low birth weight
         Ÿ  Delayed birth cry
         Ÿ  Premature delivery
         After birth, if the child has:
         Ÿ  Viral or Bacterial infections which could affect the
            brain

         Ÿ  Injury to head and neck region
         Ÿ  Exposure to poisonous substances such as lead and
            mercury

       Treatment facilities available at the
       All India Institute of Speech and

       Hearing (AIISH) for Intellectual
       Disability




       AIISH has  state of the art equipment and technology for the
       rehabilitation  of  individuals  with  intellectual  disability.
       Following are the facilities available-

         Ÿ  Speech language pathology consultation:  To assess
            the speaking abilities of the child.
