dc.description.abstract Acquisition of number skills is considered as the bedrock for later development of higher order math skills. The present study was undertaken on a sample of 50 preschool and primary school children attending regular schools. A 30-item truncated extract of the original 50-item standardized Number Competencies Schedule was used for evaluating the effectiveness of a behaviorally oriented individualized, play based and needdirected recovery program. This ten-session programme was designed to work exclusively on basic numeracy skills in the preschool and primary school children. The comparison of their pre and post intervention numeracy achievement scores showed statistically significant gains. The results are discussed in relation to child and parent characteristics along with their implications for number correction programs in school and home
