General Information: The geoscientific data acquired by Geological Survey of India from various field and laboratory-based investigations are disseminated to the scientific community through various categories of publications. These include Memoirs, Records, Bulletins, Palaeontologia Indica, Special Publications, Miscellaneous Publications, Catalogue Series, Indian Geoscience Abstracts, Manual Series, Indian Minerals (A quarterly journal), GSI News and Brochures.
Memoirs are comprehensive account of specific stratigraphic-tectonic provinces with metallogenic significance; documentation of work carried out related to geological processes of global/regional importance. First published in 1856.
Records of GSI are published since 1868. There are mainly two kinds of Records:
a) Annual General Report designated as Records, Part 1, enumerating brief account of the entire activities of the Department every year containing results of investigations related to regional surveys, mineral exploration, geotechnical, marine and research activities etc. besides information on human resource, internal relations, administrative and financial matters;
b) Collection of Scientific Papers(Records, Part. 2 to 8) which was published up to 1993 (i.e. Vol. 121). Since then, it is being published as Extended Abstracts of Progress Report of CHQ (Part 2); ER (Part 3); NER (Part 4); SR (Part 5); CR (Part 6); WR (Part 7) and NR (Part 8) for rapid dissemination of geoscientific data from the investigations carried out each field season.
Bulletin Series A is published since 1950 on economic geology. Bulletin Series B is mainly reports based on engineering geology and ground water, published since 1950. Compilation of basic analytical raw data is published as Bulletin Series C since 1986.
Miscellaneous Publication, first published in 1950 are consolidated document on geology and mineral resources of different states of India. Earlier it also included bibliography of different topics, Proceedings of Seminars / Symposia / Workshop etc.
Catalogues of collection of rocks, minerals, meteorites etc are published since 1982 as Catalogue Series. First volume of Manual Series was published in 1983. It is mainly a manual of methodology for analytical study.
Indian Journal of Geosciences (formerly Indian Minerals), the quarterly journal of earth science accepts national/international research papers, short communications and review articles on original contribution and book review on any discipline of Earth sciences. It was first published in 1947.
Released by CHQ, different regions and specialized wings for highlighting recent activities and achievements of the Organization. These publications are not for sale and for internal circulation only.
